US Citizenship Test: Practice, Study, and Prepare with Confidence
The naturalization test has an English part and a civics part. This guide explains the civics test, the two versions USCIS is using, and how to practice without treating a website quiz as the interview.

What is the US Citizenship Test?
At the naturalization interview, a USCIS officer reviews Form N-400 and tests English and civics. The civics test is oral. The officer asks questions about American government and history from a published list. You answer out loud. It is not a bubble sheet.
What topics are covered?
Expect the Constitution, Congress, the presidency, the courts, rights and responsibilities, the colonial period, the 1800s, wars of the 1900s, national symbols, and holidays. The 2008 list also includes geography. You are responsible for the answers USCIS prints, including answers that change when officials change.
The 2008 and 2025 versions
USCIS uses the filing date of Form N-400. Filed before October 20, 2025: the 2008 test, 100 questions, up to 10 asked, 6 correct to pass. Filed on or after October 20, 2025: the 2025 test, 128 questions, up to 20 asked, 12 correct to pass. Confirm that rule on the USCIS test updates page and in the Policy Manual. This website will not choose a version for you.
How the civics test works
The officer does not ask the entire bank. They stop when you have passed or when you can no longer pass. On the 2025 test that stopping point is 12 correct or 9 incorrect. On the 2008 test it is 6 correct or 5 incorrect. An alternative way of saying a correct answer can still be accepted. USCIS decides that, not a practice app.
How to prepare effectively
Pick one bank. Say the answers aloud. Separate the questions whose answers depend on where you live or who holds office. A printed list is the source. Repetition is what makes the interview feel familiar. Citizen Prep US is built for that repetition: flashcards, mock exams matched to the pass line, audio, and a record of what you still miss.
Practice questions
Five official questions, rewritten here as multiple choice so you can try them in a browser. The interview will not look like this screen.

Study tools in the app
Flashcards, spaced review, mock exams, hands-free audio, N-400 vocabulary, and progress tracking. The free sample on this site is a starting point, not the full study system.
